What’s an ebook these days?

When a book is put in to a digital media format, it becomes an ebook. There are numerous file formats for ebooks, and many are connected to certain hardware devices. Publishers are watching to see which digital device will win the market share wars.

Having a particular digital device, may limit the ebooks that a person can read, because of that devices’ format limitations. There is a reason for all these new formats. They are designed for use on hand-held devices.

There are several devices that were designed specifically as hand-held digital media readers. You may know, and we will explore these further later. These devices keep getting smaller. Your newest cell phone may now have ebook capacity.

Reading ebooks, downloaded on their cell phones, has become a popular past time for Japanese workers during their commutes to and from work. They download their ebooks a chapter at a time, and pay by the installment.

In the early days of the Internet, many books that we call classics, were copied in to text files. Project Gutenberg has 20,000 titles that members have transcribed since the project began. You can volunteer to help them by transcribing one page a week.

An ebook is basically a text file. Using PDF creation software, graphic design was added to ebooks. Compilers, are also used to assemble multiple HTML pages in to a book format. Many ebooks are also currently produced as “exe” files.

These software advances have allowed writers to have more control over the presentation of their material. They can now add charts, graphics, images, and videos to their ebook creations.

There are currently more free ebooks available online than you could read in a lifetime. Most can be read in your browser, or PDF reader. You will be surprised to see how small the file are for many classic books. They download quickly.

Fact is, beyond a fancy cover, and a few special pages at the beginning and end, most of the printed books are just pages of text. I love to read books. I am learning I can enjoy them, without destroying a lot of trees in the process.
